After a bit of a career lull, he's got The Incredible Burt Wonderstone opening in the spring and Kick-Ass 2 opening in the summer. He's also signed to make Dumb & Dumber To, due in 2014. "This life is a roller-coaster ride for sure," Carrey says, momentarily serious. "There are so many highs. I find myself working with great people, like in these two upcoming movies, and there are moments when I say, 'I can't believe how insanely lucky I am.' "In the next moment, I'm so completely caught up in my own desiring and feeling like I'm missing something that it hurts," he admits, shaking his head.
The Incredible Burt Wonderstone is about the stage-magic business. Steve Carell plays the title role, an old-school magician whose flamboyant illusions have made him a top attraction.
So, Jim, how do you see this movie? "My hope for this movie is that people will laugh and peace will be brought to the world," Carrey says. "And then there will be no borders and no nations."
But seriously, "It was a great script and a great idea," Carrey says. That was enough to get him excited. "I don't sleep," Carrey says. "I think about things. A lot. This character gave me plenty of sleepless nights, because I could do a lot of thinking about him." "What works for me is some combination of what's written and then being on a set and being in the moment," the actor says. "I've got to play. Playing is what keeps it alive for me."
"I liked being on the streets of Vegas," Carrey says. "I felt totally at home out there performing, which was nice." Will he leave it at that? Not a chance. "I did have problems being in those Vegas hotel rooms during the shoot," Carrey continues smoothly. "I think they're getting ready for the space culture in Vegas. Nobody puts in a window you can actually crack. I kept walking around the room thinking, 'I'm so dry! I need air! I'm turning into beef jerky!' I would actually chew on my dry lips."
Carrey is 51, which is hard to believe watching The Incredible Burt Wonderstone. Most of his scenes are shirtless, and his chiseled midsection isn't one that many 50-year-olds sport "I've never taken off my shirt in a movie before," Carrey says. "I figured that was Matthew McConaughey's thing. Now I'm doing it, and the diet required to do it is not a natural place to live in.
"It's also not natural to live in that kind of shape," he continues. "Sure, it looks great on screen. It's fantastic, and it gets you a lot of attention. But the truth is that you have to eat antimatter to be in that shape, and that's not a happy place to be in." He lifts his shirt to reveal a modest cushion around his midriff. "As you can see, I'm back now," Carrey says, patting his stomach. "I got Mr. Cuddly back.
Born in Ontario, Canada, the future actor was the youngest of four children. Life was hard: His father lost his job when Carrey was a teen, and the family ended up living in a Volkswagen camper van. Through it all, though, Carrey kept his sense of humour.
A born clown who always performed for his friends and family, he was only 10 when he sent Carol Burnett a resume. As a teen he took to standup comedy, working the club circuit in Toronto and ultimately dropping out of high school to pursue comedy — an unusual move for a straight-A student.
"It was only natural," he says. At 18 he moved to Los Angeles, where Rodney Dangerfield caught his act and hired Carrey to open for him in Las Vegas. It was his first time there. "I was never a gambler or into the 'sin' part of Sin City," he recalls. "I just loved the shows, which is why I was so thrilled when Rodney asked me to open for him, years ago.
"I used to just stand under the sign and think, 'Wow, I'm really here'." Bit parts in such movies as Peggy Sue Got Married (1986) and The Dead Pool (1988) followed, but it was the television series In Living Colour (1990-1994) that proved to be Carrey's breakthrough.
His plastic features, his elastic body and his willingness to do anything for a laugh landed him leading roles in three 1994 movies. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask and Dumb and Dumber were all huge hits, and suddenly Carrey was Hollywood's hottest comic. He went on to a string of comic hits, with occasional detours into drama.his last few movies didn't do well at the box office.
Life is full, says the actor, who is now a grandfather: Jackson Riley Santana, son of his daughter Jane, turned 3 in February. (Cindy Pearlman/The New York Times News Service)
