Omani detained in India released, returns home

Muscat: The Omani Consulate General in India has confirmed that Ibrahim bin Mohammed bin Hareb Al Hadrami, the Omani citizen who was detained in India last December for allegedly carrying a bullet in his baggage, was released this week.

He arrived in Oman on Wednesday, according to the consulate.

The Omani Consulate General in Mumbai as well as the Omani embassy in New Delhi were not available for further comments when contacted by the Times of Oman.

Indian airport police had arrested Al Hadrami, aged 73 years, last December for carrying a 7.62mm rifle bullet inside his razor container last September. He was detained while trying to board a flight after receiving treatment at a private hospital in Chennai.

Government support
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs had recently issued a statement that the Consulate General of Oman in Mumbai was closely following the case of Ibrahim Al Hadrami, who had been detained in India for allegedly carrying a bullet in his baggage.

The Indian authorities had also confiscated his passport, as per a court order.

The trial of the Omani national began on March 13, but was postponed until April 4 due to police documents not being delivered to the court.

The statement also said that the lawyer assigned to the case and the Consulate General of Oman in Mumbai had provided guarantees in a bid to move the verdict date forward.

However, the judge insisted on sticking to the trial date fixed earlier since the court had to take up a large number of cases.
