Muscat: His Highness Sayyid Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, Minister of Heritage and Culture, on Wednesday launched the logo of 'Nizwa, Capital of Islamic Culture 2015', in the presence of Sheikh Hamad bin Hilal Al Maamary, undersecretary at the Ministry of Heritage and Culture for Cultural Affairs.

Sheikh Al Maamary said that the Ministry of Heritage and Culture hopes that the cultural centre of Nizwa, currently under construction, proves to be a milestone of the wilayat and contributes to enriching cultural activities. He noted that the fact that this centre is in this wilayat has made it a cultural landmark.

He added that the relevant committees of 'Nizwa, the Capital of Islamic Culture 2015' have made great strides in organising and coordinating the activities and cultural programmes associated with the programme. He said that an action plan would be formulated to take off from 2015, and would include cultural events, research and information activities, in addition to hosting a range of cultural days and weeks, exhibitions and lectures.

The logo symbolises two prominent historical and architectural monuments in Nizwa, the dome of the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, one of the Islamic monuments in the wilayat, as well as Nizwa Castle.

The two monuments were chosen for the logo to commemorate these two distinguished landmarks and the word 'Nizwa' was added in the form of a dome, along with the sentence "capital of Islamic culture" in Al Thulth font, which is one of the oldest Arabic Islamic fonts.
