Organisers happy with Comex response, plan even better show next year

Muscat: Organisers are focusing more to improve the business section of Comex and mulling some revisions to next year's exhibition to fulfil the requests of common visitors.

Speaking to Times of Oman, Shilpa Ashar, Project manager at Oman International Trade and Exhibitions (OITE), said that the exhibition received a very positive response, especially from the visitors of Comex Business, including top officials of companies and organisations.

Commenting on the visitors' complaints about having difficulty finding booths hosting businesses, Ashar said that there were eight electronic screens throughout the exhibition which could be used to locate a stand and view the details of all exhibitors. "We tried our best to inform the visitors."

Also, there were people providing help at the expo, she said.

According to Ashar, the reason behind the limited number of companies at Comex Shopper is that the focus of Comex has shifted to the business section.

"There has been an increase in the number of business exhibitors over the past two years, which means the IT sector in Oman is now maturing. Comex used to be known for just deals and gadgets. But now it has become a business forum," noted Ashar.

However, she said that the organisers have the public in mind and plans to house Comex Shopper in a completely separate section of the exhibition.

On the limited number of gadgets available for purchase, Ashar said, "Now with the hypermarkets taking over, the number of people exhibiting at an exhibition like this has been reduced because many gadgets are available in hyper- markets.

"It is true that they (visitors) have a limited choice at Comex, but even with that limited choice, what they are being offered is at very
good prices."

On the lack of participation by electronic companies, she said that Comex approached many of them, including Samsung, LG and Panasonic, but they had not shown interest in attending.

She added that the timing of the expo will not change next year, though Saturday will be included, given the shift to a Friday-Saturday weekend
in Oman.

However, the duration will not be extended next year, Ashar said. "This is not meant to be a month-long festival."

In addition, she said Comex will be very happy to expand to other governorates in the Sultanate if there is a demand.
