Muscat: In another milestone achievement for the private sector in the Sultanate, His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmed Jabir Al Sabah, the Emir of the State of Kuwait, conferred Omantel Excellence Award of the second grade on the GCC level which comes in recognition of Omantel major contributions to youth fields.
The award was received in special gala held on the sidelines of the GCC Youths and Sports Ministers' meeting.
Sheikh Saad Mohammed Al Mardhouf Al Saadi, Minister of Sports Affairs and chairman of the Sultanate's delegation taking part at the 28th meeting for the GCC Youths and Sports Ministers hosted by Kuwait, congratulated Omantel on the achievement saying that Omantel is ' a key partner in supporting youth and sports in the Sultanate. Omantel, which provides considerable support to many youth activities, is a role model and a leader in social responsibility'.
"I congratulate Omantel for obtaining this prestigious Award of Excellence from the GCC Secretariat General and the honour to receive it from His Highness Emir of Kuwait. This recognition in the field of sports is not the first for Omantel as it captured the Golden Gear Award from the Ministry of Sports Affairs for the last year being the biggest supporter of the Omani sports. The company always provides considerable support to ensure honorable participation of the Omani team at the different regional and international competitions," he added.
"We hope that this award would encourage other private sector companies to do the same to bring benefits not only to youths but to the society in general. I also call upon youths to benefit from the programmes provided by the Ministry of Sports Affairs," he added.
Commenting on the award, Khalid Al Zubair, Chairman of the Oman Olympic Committee, said that 'Omantel's wining this prestigious award on the GCC level is a source of pride for us all in general and for the Oman Olympic Committee in particular. We appreciate the efforts made by Omantel to enter into real partnership with Omani youth through supporting youth programmes and events. The award is very well-deserved by Omantel'.
Omantel CEO Dr. Amer Awadh Al Rawas said that we are extremely proud to receive such a prestigious recognition from His Highness Emir of Kuwait.
"The award crowns the efforts made by Omantel over the past years ad our support and subsidy to the initiatives made to achieve sustainable development. Sports are one of our key focus areas in our strategy to serve the community.
"This recognition should encourage everyone of us to leave no stone unturned to promote Omani sports and raise the name of Oman high in the sky at the different regional and international sports competitions," he added.
"We have a firm belief that supporting the Omani youths is a national duty and therefore we are always ready to go extra mile in providing the required support for the Omani youths," he concluded.
Hamdan Moosa Al Harasi, GM of Omantel Corporate Affairs Unit, said: "Omantel has a clear-cut and transparent strategy to serve the community. Sports are one of our key focus areas. This has been very evident when we partnered with Oman Football Association (OFA) to sponsor the premier league (Omantel League) throughout the past six years. We also sponsored the Oman national football team that won the maiden Gulf Cup in the history of the Omani sports and partnered in sponsoring the 2nd Asian Beach Game and many other sports events."
Moreover, Omantel recently partnered with the Ministry of Education to organise Omantel Olympic School Days. It also sponsored Oman Sail events in a bid to have an enthusiastic young Omani generation that can revive the rich marine history of the Sultanate and raise its name at the different international competitions.
It is worth mentioning that Omantel captured the Golden Gear Award from the Ministry of Sports Affairs for three consecutive years for being the leader in supporting sports in Oman. It also captured the sports referendum committee award from the Omani Journalists Association for being the pioneer supporter of the Omani sports over the past years.
