Muscat: The top four in the women's singles justified their top billing having reached the semifinals at the Bank Muscat-sponsored annual badminton tournament organised by the Indian Social Club (ISC) Muscat.
Top seed and defending champion Bharathi Ramachandran took her place in the semifinal after convincingly defeating Reeta Shenoy 15-3, 15-8 and was joined in the semis by second seed Alka Dhavale, who registered a 15-6, 15-6 victory over Vijayasree Rajan.
Third seed Mayaja Harish also advanced to the semifinal after her comfortable 15-2, 15-3 victory over Triveni Naidu and fourth seed Jessy Joseph survived a late surge in the second game before overcoming Savita 15-4, 16-14. After tamely losing the first game, Savita made a fight of it and saved four match points in the second before going down fighting.
In earlier rounds of the women's singles, Savita had defeated Rekha Naithani 15-3, 15-7 and Triveni Naidu overcame Shivani Juyal and a hard-fought three setter with a 15-11, 15-17, 15-12 verdict.
Sanjay Venkat progressed to the quarterfinals of the boys under-15 singles after overcoming Nithin Chandrashekar 16-21, 21-10, 21-9. In other second round matches of the same event, Prathyush defeated Ronan Machado 21-6, 21-6, Jeswin Mathew and Mohamed Iman played a high quality match before Jeswin edged to a 21-18, 21-16 victory and Yash Deshpande defeated Anirudh H. 21-10, 21-10 to enter the last eight stage.
