Muscat: Over 280 golfers and guests from Oman participated in the first annual Golf Ball recently at the Shangri-La's Barr Al Jissah Ballroom.
The event was organised by a local Omani company, Golf World, and sponsored by The Zubair Corporation and OUA.
When asked about the Golf Ball, Leon Sassen, General Manager of Golf World, commented: "It was everything I had hoped it to be, the atmosphere and the support was incredible. A huge thank you to our main sponsor, The Zubair Corporation, and to OUA for helping us bring this event to fruition.
"We would also like to express our appreciation to all of the golf courses for supporting the ball, advertising it to their members, and joining in on the festivities on the evening. It was an unbelievable night and I can't wait for next year."
Due to the sponsorship from The Zubair Corporation, guests were entertained by a live band and renowned DJ in Shangri-La's beautiful ballroom, they had a delicious four-course meal, and they joined in an exciting mini golf competition with the chance to win a weekend stay at the Al Husn Hotel and Spa.
Furthermore, guests were given a sleeve of The Zubair Corporation Callaway golf balls to carry on improving their skills on the greens. With OUA's support, there was also complimentary beverages for the whole evening.
When discussing the participation of The Zubair Corporation, Ziyad Al Zubair, Director of the Zubair Corporation, mentioned: "It was a great event and was good to see golfers from each club celebrating together, it really shows how golf is growing in Oman."
The Golf Ball opened with a Fijian theme where people were greeted with a traditional welcome, "Bula", when they entered the ballroom in honour of Leon Sassen, the entrepreneur behind the ball.
The concept behind the ball was to have all the golfers in Oman celebrating the wonderful sport of golf. The ball was supported by all four-grass golf courses Almouj Golf, Muscat Hills Golf Club, Ras Al Hamra Golf Club and Ghala Valley Golf Club, who sold tickets and advertised to all of their members. The branding of the event was bright and bold in celebration of everyone coming together.
The putting competition was one of the highlights on the night. Lucky contenders had one shot to putt across a difficult golf hole that consisted of sand bunkers and a smaller than standard golf hole. With only one player successfully sinking the putt, the very last contestant brought it to sudden death, as he too putted his ball into the hole.
Anil Sethi and Arjun Raha then had one putt each, with Arjun Raha becoming the eventual winner of the competition and the prize, which was a weekend stay at the Al Husn Hotel and spa package, sponsored by The Shangri La.
The Golf Ball ended with the special desert created by Shangri-La's Pastry Chef, Wolfgang Schwaerzler, who created a nine-hole golf desert buffet that consisted of miniature golfers playing the greens, while Devan Thuppali and his band thoroughly entertained the crowd until the early hours.
