Muscat: Five agreements for setting up new hospitals were signed by Dr Ahmed Mohammed Al Sa'eedi, Minister of Health, yesterday. The planned hospitals are to come up at Al Suwaiq in Al Batinah Governorate, Khasab in Musandam, Najat in North Al Batinah, Samail in Al Dakhiliyah, and Al Falah in South Al Sharqiyah.

The agreements were inked with a design and supervision consultancy services company for the purpose. The signing ceremony was held in the presence of the undersecretaries, Ministry of Health's officials and representatives of the company.

According to Dr Said Khamis Al Kalbani, Director General of Engineering Affairs at the Ministry of Health, the Al Suwaiq new hospital will consist of 300 beds and 53 outpatient clinics providing other services, whereas the capacity of Khasab, Najat, Samail and Al Falah hospitals is 150 beds and 35 outpatient clinics each.

Besides these five hospitals, other projects are also likely to be awarded soon, Dr Al Sa'eedi stated.

The projects include Saham Hospital in North Al Batinah, Al Nima Hospital in North Al Sharqiyah, Muscat General Hospital and 17 health centres which are in their last stage being awarded to construction and supervision companies.

About the planned Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah in the Dhofar Governorate, Dr Al Sa'eedi hoped that a tender for construction will be announced soon.

The Sultanate's healthcare system is all set to see many state-of -the-art hospitals come up to cater to the needs of its growing population and also carry on the achievements of the past 40 years.

It may be recalled that the Eighth Five-year Plan (2011-2015) envisages the establishment of 10 new hospitals, 37 health centres and other projects in the various governorates of Oman.

"This is very good news for the citizens of different governorates. These hospitals will cater to the needs of the people of these areas and they would no more need to travel to Muscat to find treatment," said a citizen from the Al Batinah Governorate.
