‘Don’t go on purchasing spree during Ramadan in Oman’

Muscat: In view of the popular trend of people going on a spending  spree, the Public Authority for Consumer Protection (PACP) has urged them to purchase only what is necessary, and well in advance, for the Holy Month of Ramadan.

The authority is reaching out to the people through social media in the form of text or video messages to educate them about purchasing pattern for the Holy Month two Eids which would follow soon after this month.

The PACP has taken strong note of this practice and is trying to reach out to the people to educate them about purchasing behaviour and budgeting during Ramadan, Eid Al Fitr and Eid Al Adha, said an official of the PACP.

He said that the decision is aimed at creating awareness about spending wisely following previous experience of people rushing to hypermarkets and supermarkets and filling their trolleys with all sorts of food and other general utility items, even if they actually didn't need them.

The PACP was trying to reach out to the people through social media to tell them that they should purchase only what they really needed, rather than just hoarding or stocking unnecessarily.

It has also urged people not be carried away by the promotional schemes and rebates in the market. "If you would not take care of this, you would end up purchasing what you actually didn't need," said the PACP.

The authority has also urged the people to do proper budgeting for marketing seasons like Ramadan, and also for Eid Al Fitr and Eid Al Adha, which would follow soon after Ramadan before schools open. Proper budgeting for such seasons would protect people from landing in financial difficulties, it said.

Through videos, it has tried to explain how to do budgeting for the month of Ramadan. It has categorically said that people should make a list of necessary items before landing in the market and beginning to purchase right, left and centre.

It said that over spending on a variety of food items during Ramadan is uncalled for and has adverse effect on health.  Instead, people should arrange for necessary and healthy food for Iftar and Suhoor.
