Muscat: International companies and experts representing several countries are expected to attend Oman's first Public Transport Conference, which is scheduled to be held on October 13 and 14.

The conference has been organised by the Oman Road Transport Association in partnership with Al Nimr Conferences and is supported by the Ministry of Transport and Communications and the Ministry of Social Development.

As many as 300 participants are expected to attend the conference, Sherwin Sevillena, conference director of Al Nimr Expo, told a press briefing here on Wednesday.

He said that the participants will be from Oman, Gulf and other countries, including the Netherlands, the UK and Singapore. The theme of the conference is public transport: a driving force towards economic and social development.

The conference will discuss a range of issues, including the challenges facing the development of public transport in Oman and the lessons that can be learned from other countries and mega cities to develop an effective and sustainable public transport system.

Regulating public transport
According to Sevillena, the conference will cover various subjects such as investment capabilities, strategies, road map and framework for the future of Oman's public transport, proactive and effective implementation strategy of sound policies to govern and regulate the public transport sector, economic, social and environmental benefits of public transport development and in-country value (ICV).

The event will also review project opportunities for small and medium enterprises and macro-micro entrepreneurs, social development, job creation and opportunities for public-private partnership in the public transport sector, he said.

"This first-of-its-kind public transport event in Oman will provide key stakeholders and participating companies the opportunity to explore partnership and gauge the pulse of this new and exciting sector," said Salim Al Hashmi, chairman of Al Nimr Expo.

Khalid bin Salim bin Ali Al Dirai, chairman of the Oman Road Transport Association also noted that it is important that both the government and the private sector explore the emerging opportunities.
