Muscat: Stop smoking, eat food rich in fruit and vegetables and adopt a healthy lifestyle including regular exercise if you wish to ward off an impending heart attack. Any delay in making the necessary changes to your food habits as well as the sedentary lifestyle could prove fatal, says a cardiologist at Apollo Medical Centre.
Dr Parthiban T., explains that coronary artery disease is basically a lifestyle disease.
"We see mildly elevated sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure levels and obesity all as the parameters that add up to what is known as metabolic syndrome. Also, most often early heart attacks are observed in heavy smokers. The more cigarettes a person smokes per day puts him in greater risk of a heart attack. This eventually results in cardiac failure," he said.
Dr Parthiban, Cardiologist at AMC received his MBBS, MD and DM in Cardiology from Madras (now Chennai) and was part of Apollo Hospitals Chennai before joining Apollo Muscat in the year 2009.
"Obesity, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, smoking and sedentary lifestyle are major contributors of heart disease. Smoking is quite common amongst locals whereas most of the expatriates who are in their middle-age suffer from conditions like hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol or pre-existing coronary disease, which explains the high prevalence of heart disease in Oman," added Dr Parthiban.
While discussing recovery after heart attacks, Dr Parthiban also mentions, "Time is muscle. The earlier the treatment the better will be the results. Once the heart muscle is damaged it is very difficult to regenerate."
Apollo Medical Centre recognises prevention of heart diseases as an area of prime concern the world over as they often strike without warning and are potentially fatal.
Thus it offers scientifically designed Heart Check Packages that ensure complete peace of mind and a reassurance of healthy heart to anyone who avails the service.
Dr Parthiban suggests prevention of cardiac problems is possible through significant lifestyle changes. He advises regular cardio exercises and a healthy diet that should include fresh and healthy food items like fruits, vegetables, chicken or fish. He further goes on to say that people should generally avoid oily, fried items and red meat to ward off any impending heart issues.
In an age where experiencing stress on a daily basis has almost become an accepted way of living, it is important to take some time out to care for one of the most essential organs of the body — the heart. To do so, it is a must to practice healthy living habits every day. Additionally, routine visits to a medical centre for regular check-ups assure general well-being and wholesome living.
