Royal Oman Police prohibit heavy trucks from plying roads in Dhofar governorate during Khareef

Muscat: With an aim to ensure smooth flow of traffic on the roads of Dhofar governorate during the Khareef season, the Royal Oman Police (ROP) has decided to prohibit trucks carrying more than 10 tonnes of load from plying on any road in the governorate during certain hours.

The decision will become effective from Thursday. Plying of such trucks will be banned from 6:30am to 8:30am and 1:30pm to 3:30pm.

An ROP official told the Times of Oman that the ROP will provide air ambulance along the Adam Thumrait road stretch, to serve the visitors of Khareef  season.

Along this stretch, emergency services like mobile ROP centres, civil defence and rescue teams will be present. Speed measuring radars will also be installed.

Shuaib Al Balushi, a Salalah resident, said he believed the decision to bar heavy trucks during peak hours will benefit the residents and visitors alike, especially during these days.

"This decision will smoothen the traffic flow," said Al Balushi.

He added that the visitors will find it easier to move around in the city as Khareef always witnesses a large number of visitors.

Ali Al Margabi, a regular visitor to Salalah, said in his opinion the decision is really important and must be made effective whenever the city experiences such a rush of visitors.

"The move to ban heavy trucks' movement will reduce the accident rate during Khareef Salalah," said Al Margabi.

Meanwhile, Khareef Salalah started in some parts of Dhofar even as weather witnessed a drop and there was some drizzling too.

Many tourists have flocked to Salalah to enjoy the Khareef season that kicked off on June 21 and will last till mid-September.

Social media was abuzz with a number of snapshots capturing the green cover in Dhofar. In many pictures, scenes of drizzle and mist among the mountains brought out the beauty of the landscape.
