Muscat: If you are planning to purchase firecrackers to celebrate Eid Al Fitr, you should immediately drop the idea as the Royal Oman Police (ROP) has issued a stern warning against firecrackers and any attempt to smuggle these highly inflammable items into the country.
The ROP announced on Tuesday that firecrackers are a "danger for public safety", and, therefore, "a tight control has been imposed" on all official ports to curb any attempt to smuggle firecrackers into Oman.
ROP has announced that it will track down those smuggling firecrackers or selling these in the country and will take legal action against them, bringing them before a competent court.
ROP has also urged parents to monitor their children and educate them about the dangers of using firecrackers. ROP has been taking strong action against smuggling of firecrackers. In the recent past, it was reported that the police had foiled nine attempts to smuggle firecrackers at the Al Wajajah border checkpoint in the Wilayat of Buraimi.
In this case, the smugglers had concealed the firecrackers under the vehicle's engine, which also constituted a danger for them. The accused were referred to the Public Prosecution for investigation and trial.
In yet another incident, the police foiled an attempt by a citizen to smuggle fireworks through the Al Wajajah border. It arrested the citizen on charges of smuggling fireworks that were hidden beneath a cargo load being carried by the truck.
