Muscat: An Asian national has been sentenced to death by the Criminal Court of Nizwa for the murder of a 55-year-old Omani citizen in the wilayat of Izki in March last year.
The accused had confessed before the judge that he had murdered the elderly Omani citizen to commit robbery.
The Omani shopkeeper had gone missing in March 2013 on the day his shop was burgled. His body was found dumped in a remote area in the wilayat of Izki.
The body was discovered under some trees in Al Ghulail, Izki, near his village. The grocery shop owner used to work until midnight, according to an Izki resident.
Late hour working schedule made him vulnerable to the culprit's intent. The victim was murdered with a metallic instrument, a fact borne out by the forensic examination.
The deceased's sons, when contacted by the Times of Oman, welcomed the verdict saying the accused deserved it for what he had done to their father.
Al Mahrooqi, the eldest son of the shopkeeper, said, "We are very happy that justice has been delivered. We trust the independence of Oman's judiciary."
His younger son said that he was present in the court when the judge delivered the verdict. Even the Grand Mufti of Oman has approved the verdict.
One of his sons thanked the ROP and the investigators for the swift probe that resulted in the nailing of the accused.
