Muscat: As the conflict in Gaza continues, support for Palestinians is growing in Oman, with more people joining online protests and calling for more demonstrations.

Words like Palestine, Israel and Gaza have been trending on Twitter in Oman, and a number of Omanis have joined the hashtag protests #IStandWithPalestine and #ISupportGaza.

Two young men from Indian School Muscat, Aditya Ashar and Usman Khalique, have been especially active in rallying support, having created Facebook and Instagram pages called Oman Stands for Palestine. In the first three days, the Facebook page received more than 2,500 likes, while more than 200 people followed the Instagram page in its first few hours.

"We have a large audience from Oman, and among others who have left Oman but still consider it home. The only thing we need is for people to know more about these pages so we get maximum support. That would help us with our future plans to help Palestine, as we have planned a lot of demonstrations," Aditya told Times of Oman.

Oman Stands for Palestine also collaborated with the Embassy of Palestine for an event held on Monday evening, and intends to host other rallies and peace marches, after they receive permission from authorities. Aditya said he hopes to have more people at future demonstrations thanks to the social media sites.

Aditya, who described himself as "just a fellow human trying to do some good for our brothers and sisters in Gaza," acknowledged that being far from Gaza, people here in Oman cannot do much to stop the conflict, but said it's important to do whatever they can to stand with Palestine. "At least we can help with donations, and if people protest, it might put pressure on the Israeli government. They should know the world is waking up," he added.
