Muscat: An Indian school student in Oman has won a global Green award for his initiatives that strive to help clean the environment and make Oman a greener country.
The project 'GreenOman,' submitted by Hridith Sudev, a 9th grade student at the Indian School in Salalah, is aimed at raising awareness about the negative effect on the environment of mankind's certain actions and proposes to turn things around through campaigns carried out among the people. Hridith's project won the 2014 Oman Energy Globe Award founded in 1999 by the Austrian energy pioneer, Wolfgang Neumann.
"Each and every person, children and adults alike, has the responsibility to save the earth. Together we can stride towards a greener nature… and a better future," Hridith, the award winner, told the Times of Oman.
"Modern life is having a grave impact on the earth and humans are the root cause of environmental problems. So only we humans can cure this illness by doing small things like saving energy, reducing emissions or practicing recycling. Initially, we faced some obstacles as adults were not listening to us. After seeing some of our dedicated work, we did find supporters among parents, teachers and even a minister," Hridith added.
A first step, to save energy at their school, Hridith and his friends, convinced everyone to turn off their air conditioners and lights when not in use and also to replace them with environment friendly versions.
The next step for the team was to convince people to consume less water and use better water appliances. Another task was to request residents in the area to install a device in the chimney to control and reduce the amount of harmful emissions being released into the atmosphere, he added.
The project also conducted various events such as 'Planting a Sapling Day' (87 plants so far), 'Poster Making Contest', 'Nature Walk' and a clean-up campaign.
With more than 160 participating countries and over 1,000 project submissions annually, the Energy Globe Award is considered the most prestigious environmental prize worldwide.
