Muscat: An Omani girl in her twenties reportedly committed suicide in the wilayat of Musannah by hanging herself from a fan with the help of her scarf on Sunday morning. The girl, who hailed from the wilayat of Khabourah, had accompanied her mother to meet her sister who was married in Musannah.
The deceased left a suicide note explaining to her family the reason behind her step, the Royal Oman Police said.
The girl seemed to have been tormented by a failed relationship, according to the ROP.
The family found the girl hanging from the fan in a room. Last year, a 26-year-old national had committed suicide by shooting himself in the head in the Al Maladah area in the wilayat of Musannah. The deceased was working as a teacher in a government school. He was suffering from psychological illness, according to his relatives.
The number of suicide cases dropped in 2014 to just two, compared to seven cases in 2013, according to the ROP.
The total number of suicide cases in Oman from 2000 to 2010 stood at 599, averaging 59.9 cases a year. Omani citizens account for 8.7 cases every year, according to the ROP Forensics Department's statistics.
