Muscat Goan bags title at ‘Goencho Avaz’

Muscat: At the recently held 'Goencho Avaz', an all Goa Konkani solo and duet singing competition, organised by Herald Group and State Bank of India, Scully D'souza, based in Muscat and a student of Indian School, Muscat (ISM) bagged the second runner-up title in the solo category witnessed by a jam-packed audience at the Dinanath Mangesh Hall (Kala Academy) in Panaji, Goa recently.

Adding to this latest achievement, Scully was recently declared the second runner-up at the May Queen beauty pageant organised by the Goan Committee of Oman, held at the Aviation Club, Muscat.

Out of a total number of 83 participants from both North and South Goa braved the auditions, finals and the mega finals. Scully hailing from Aldona, Goa with her enthralling performances settled for the third prize among the top three in the mega finals.

Proud of their daughter's achievement, Scully's parents mentioned that they were in Goa merely on a month's annual school vacation when they came across the announcement in the local daily and registered for the same.

Speaking about the concept of the Daily Herald organising such an event like this, Joe D'Souza, father of Scully said, "This is a stepping stone for many young artistes to showcase their talent in a big way and hone the same to emerge as the future stars in the world of entertainment."

Adding further, he also mentioned that there are numerous other spheres of talent like art and theatre in the youngsters and could be put to test in such kind of encouraging competitions.   

The level of competition was highly challenging with contestants going head-to-head and reviving the old traditional Goan songs composed with utter lyrics and melodious music. Tough decisions delivered by the jury praised the talent of every contestant along with the work put in by the nine-piece Goan band headed by Roy Menezes, music instructor at the Kala Academy, Goa.

Special performances by the judges – Anthony San, Sonia Shirsat, Fr. Domnic Alvares and Lulu Fortes won the hearts of everyone present.

Felicitation of the winners was done by the Chief Guest, Dy. Chief Minister of Goa, Francis D'Souza, President of Tiatr Academy of Goa, Prince Jacob and Rajagopalan, Asst. GM Regional SBI. The event was covered by the local HCN TV channel.
