Muscat: Philippine expatriates in Oman are happy about the news that Oman Air has got approval to fly direct to Manila, saying it would greatly improve the experience of passengers.

The news portal of Philippines-based TV5 – www.interaksyon.com – recently quoted Jose Angel Honrado, general manager of the state-run Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), as saying that the agency had approved the request of Oman Air and Garuda Airlines to operate at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 (NAIA1) ahead of its rehabilitation.

Date not decided
However, he said that he had not been informed as to when the two airlines will start their services. "I think, as soon as possible."

Honrado also said that the rehabilitation of NAIA1 will be completed by the first quarter of 2015.

Philippine expatriates in Muscat welcomed the news, saying that it would reduce the burden of travelling via other destinations to Manila.

"I am very happy to hear the news. The last time I went home was in 2013 and now I can travel more frequently. Sometimes there are long transit hours, which are a waste of time and money," Agripino, a Filipino national, told Times of Oman.

"Whenever I want to go to Manila, I have to fly to Dubai or Abu Dhabi and then to Manila. One other option is going to Karachi and then to Bangkok to fly to the Philippines. There are options for indirect flights, but they only exhaust you," he said.

Manny, another Filipino worker, said that it was very good news. "Before, we could fly directly with Gulf Air, but it has stopped flying to Manila. So the new decision will make travelling much easier for us."

Lucille, another Filipino expat,  also said that it will definitely be a boon for Filipinos in Oman as indirect flights are usually just a waste of time.  Oman Air officials could not be reached immediately for comment.
