So what's next in terms of cutting-edge global fashion? Those in the know are convinced it's all things African…

Leading the way in the drive to get African labels firmly on the global fashion map is London's fourth African Week with clothes from more than 50 top and up-and-coming designers which showcase what is fast becoming a major style movement. It hasn't escaped the mainline catwalks – designer Stella Jean caused a serious buzz at the Milan Fashion Week with African-inspired prints and street-stylers are taking up the trend as though there's no tomorrow.

The African Creative Collective is busy pushing the talents of such new designers as Kenema, which sources fabrics in West Africa, mainly bold but timeless shapes. And have a look at the super ethnic styles from newcomers like Josh & Nicol and Chichia. Word on the street is that it's only a matter of time before the new crop of fledgling African designers hit the fashion world big-time. So get involved now before everyone else does.

• Move over florals – street stylers are now busy clashing stripes and grid prints. The trick is to keep colours bold and silhouettes clean. We've seen chic striped shorts worn with a blue and red grid print knit – and it actually works!

• Want something that will look as good in the city streets as on the beach? Then buy a kimono. They're selling by the thousand on the high street – New Look have sold one every minute since April! Wear with everything from glossy frocks to boyfriend jeans.

• Pink has us in a fashion frenzy at the moment. Look for sophisticated co-ordinates; say a tailored coat and stylish trousers. They will look great together but also work as super separates.

• A colourful jacket is the cover-up to covet this season. Follow Gucci's lead and go for pea-green (yes, really). Surprisingly, it goes with almost everything including contrasting pastels, cargo prints, knee-high boots... and emerald trousers.

• Head-to-toe red could be huge in the near future – Miuccia Prada says so. So clash colours with bright accessories layer a polo-neck underneath and add texture with a fluffy red scarf.

• If you don't own a sleeveless blazer you've been missing out big time. It works with everything from jeans to leather leggings.
