Latin dishes add spice to Rumba Lattina restaurant in Muscat

Muscat: Rumba Lattina's tapas menu isn't just about light bites, as a few plates make a generous meal with delicious flavours.

The new Latin-themed restaurant which opened in The Cave complex overlooking Darsait at the end of June has two options for diners – a full à la carte menu and a tapas menu which offers a variety of appetisers. A few tapas plates makes it more than enough for a filling meal.

At Rumba Lattina, the tapas menu can take customers on a little culinary journey of Latin America. There are items from seven different countries, from Mexico in the north all the way down to Argentina in the south. There are also a few dishes that are common throughout the region.

There are a few standout dishes. The Mofongo de Calamares, a Caribbean dish of fried calamari with fried plantains, is fresh and spicy. The Nachos Rumba, a Mexican classic with crunch homemade chips drenched in black bean sauce, cheese and jalapenos, are deliciously addictive. Flautas, crispy tortillas filled with chicken or grilled vegetables, are served with sour cream and a bean sauce, making for an experience that is both crunchy and soft, and rich in taste.

The must-try dish, however, is the Elote Al Grill, charred-grilled corn on the cob slathered in smoky chipotle mayonnaise, sour cream, halloumi cheese, lime and chili. It's messy, but packed with interesting flavours.

While most dishes are delicious, there are a couple that could be improved a bit. The Argentine empanadas had a pastry that fell apart in one's mouth, but the meat was dry and bland. The tacos, another Mexican speciality, were served with a lovely, fresh guacamole, but the thick slices of meat were tough and sinewy. Perhaps ground meat would have been better.

New blends
To accompany the tapas there is an extensive beverage menu. Along with the regular choices of soft drinks, fresh juices, coffee and tea, there is also a mocktail menu with 20 different choices. In a city where new combinations are hard to find, Rumba Lattina has managed to create some interesting new blends, such as the Pizarro, a refreshing combination of mint, basil, pineapple and lemon, and the Tortuga, a tropical blend of pomegranate, mangosteen, apricot and blackberry with a hint of spicy ginger.

Of course, no meal is complete without dessert. The Brownie Ardiente, though not particularly Latin, is a chocoholic's delight- dark, rich chocolate with a sizzling chocolate sauce paired with a light lemongrass and lime ice cream. For a dessert that makes one feel they are right at home, Tres Leches is a melt-in-your-mouth vanilla sponge soaked in three different types of milk, with a hint of coconut and a big hit of cinnamon. While some people may prefer the à la carte  menu, the tapas menu is a great option to taste a number of dishes. It's also ideal for sharing with friends. Just make sure to ask the waiter to serve them one or two at a time so they can be eaten hot and fresh.

Rumba Lattina is sure to become a favourite for people looking for new tastes and experiences, and a tapas meal is a great introduction to the city's first pan-Americana restaurant.
