Muscat: Plans are under way to establish a full-fledged Burjeel Hospital in Oman soon, Clancey Po, CEO of Burjeel Hospital Abu Dhabi, said.

Speaking at the opening of the new Burjeel Medical Centre here on August 31, Po said, "We will soon be launching the Burjeel Hospital project in Al Khuwair, construction of which is currently under way."

The 22,000 sq ft Burjeel Medical Centre located next to the Al Meera Hypermarket in Azaiba, which opened yesterday, offers many speciality services such as internal medicine, family medicine, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology along with ophthalmology, general surgery, dental and orthopaedics. It also has services for cardiology, ENT and dermatology. In addition, the centre also hosts special physician visits in specialities such as neurology, urology, nephrology, and pulmonology.

The new centre has been established as an extension of Burjeel Hospital Abu Dhabi to expand its quality of health care services to the residents of Oman.

Dr Charles Stanford - Senior Director of VPS Healthcare added, "We are proud to launch Burjeel Medical Centre in Muscat, as this marks the opening of our first facility in the Sultanate of Oman. This centre has been set up as part of Burjeel Hospital's commitment to connect with neighbourhoods, and extend 'The art of healing' to communities where there is a demand for quality health care".

Burjeel Hospital is Abu Dhabi's leading tertiary care facility. Burjeel Medical Centre in Oman was opened under the auspices of Dr Sultan Al Busaidy, adviser to the Minister of Health, Oman. Indian Ambassador to Oman J. S. Mukul was also present on the occasion.

Dr Shamsheer Vayalil, managing director, VPS Healthcare assured that the group is hiring specialists from various nationalities and are trying to make the hospital as multi-speciality as possible. When asked about recruiting local nurses from universities, he said, "At this time we won't recruit fresh graduates as they would need further training. We are focused on bringing in experts and provide high quality medical care for our patients."

Dr Vayalil also added, "The opening of the new medical centre demonstrates our focus on widening our expertise in health care and reaching out to communities beyond the UAE. Burjeel Medical Centre will continue to create synergies with communities and enhance the experience and win the trust of our guests. Burjeel Medical Centre's wonderful team of dedicated physicians is happy to make a difference and reach out to the people of the Sultanate."

Po explained that the group had conducted a market survey in Muscat that revealed a gap in the premium level of care.

"In the last two years Burjeel has made a mark in the premium health care sector in UAE and today in just two years has two hospitals and one large medical centre. While there are several hospital projects in the UAE, we decided to start with the medical centre and will soon be launching the Burjeel Hospital project," he said.

Burjeel Medical Centre also supports diagnostic and medication requirements of guests as it houses comprehensive radiology services with a 1.5 Tesla MRI unit to be installed, an in-house laboratory and a well-stocked pharmacy," he added.

Retnakumar Janardanan, CEO, VPS Healthcare – Oman, said, "We believe there is no compromise when it comes to the health of our patients, and their comfort is an unwritten expectation from us. In keeping with this, we are certain that our centre in Muscat will provide a wonderful 'art of healing' experience for all. Top in-house doctors and visiting consultants, supported by a keen nursing and customer care team will be our key strength."
