Muscat: With the Extreme Sailing Series set to begin in Muscat today, Duqm has come on-board to sponsor a team skippered by renowned British sailor Rob Greenhalgh, the organisers announced yesterday. Team Duqm Oman will accept the invitational team slot offered by the Extreme Sailing Series to each host venue and will pit two Omani teams against some of the world's best sailors.

The Wave, Muscat, is the other Omani team, led by Leigh McMillan from Britain. "We are quite excited to be part of this great event, and when the invitation came from Oman Sail, we didn't think twice," said Saleh Al Hasni, a specialist for investor services at Duqm, during a press conference at Oman Sail headquarters, yesterday.

Eight international teams featuring some of the world's best sailors are prepared for ACT 1 of the 2013 global tour, starting at The Wave, Muscat, today.

The unique high-performance, stadium-style global racing circuit, designed for spectators, is set to come alive in its seventh season with the rash of new talent. The new and returning sailors have an impressive combined resume: 18 Olympic campaigns, 30 America's Cup campaigns, 33 World Championship wins, and six Olympic medals. In a press statement, Yahya bin Said bin Abdullah Al Jabri, chairman for the special economic zone authority at Duqm, remarked, "Our goal is to put Duqm on the map as a strategic location in a strategic environment and to provide a gateway to the Middle East and India for shipping."

Nasser Al Mashari has returned to the event to strengthen Team Duqm Oman. "I am delighted to be racing on an Omani-sponsored boat for the Muscat event. It will be good to get back in the water, particularly home waters, and to race in front of the Omani people," stated Nasser, who has been racing as the bowman on the Extreme 40s for two years. Other crew members of Team Duqm Oman include Will Howden (GBR), Bleddy Mon (GBR), and Andrew Walsh (GBR).

Issa Al Ismaili, events director at Oman Sail, said Duqm's participation has only proven the growing popularity of the Extreme Sailing Series. "Duqm's participation will once again boost and strengthen the sport in the country," he claimed.

When asked if Duqm would be part of future events at Oman Sail, Vermeulen Reggy, commercial director at Port of Duqm, affirmed, "This is our first leg (of the Extreme Sailing Series), and we are fortunate to be part of a growing sport. But this is an early stage to talk about our future plans." Team Duqm Oman skipper Greenhalgh, with three Volvo Ocean Races behind him, including one win, and having participated in numerous world championships, believed the four-day event would be exciting. "It's a new team, but we have a great deal of experience, and it's going to be a good championship," he noted.

Oman Sail CEO David Graham welcomed Duqm on board. "We are both seeking to put Oman and Duqm on the map. Our presence in this sport goes from strength to strength every year from both a competitive and a business point of view," he added.

James Greenhough, sponsorship manager at Oman Sail, and George Daniel, finance director at Oman Drydock Company, were also present at the press conference.
