Oil firms to include ‘Made in Oman Index’

Muscat: The major oil companies in Oman are set to incorporate joint qualification system and Made in Oman Index while tendering projects and services in a move to strengthen in country value (ICV).

The Made in Oman Index is aimed at enhancing use of Omani products and professionals
services while implementing projects. Nasser bin Khamis al Jashmi, Undersecretary at the Ministry of Oil and Gas, said ICV has three main components — goods, services and skills.

"In ICV, we are addressing several issues and one of them is the joint qualification system. We are getting all kinds of support from all operators (in the oil sector)," added Al Jashmi, while addressing the media on Sunday.

Al Jashmi said the ministry has appointed three consultants to effectively address these issues, which are gap analysis on supply side, local skills development and local content solution.

 "We are doing it step by step and we are learning from the experience of other countries like Malaysia, who have more experience in this area," he said adding; "The momentum is really building up. We see almost every day companies are coming out with new initiatives." Dr Mohammed bin Hamad Al Rumhy, Minister of Oil and Gas, said ICV is aimed at creating wealth for local people and creating employment opportunities.

Qalhat, Oman LNG merger
Referring to the proposed merger of Qalhat LNG with Oman LNG, Harib Al Kitani, chief executive officer of Oman LNG, said a consultant appointed for studying the merger will submit its report before the end of the year to the shareholders of both companies. "And it is up the board to take a decision on the proposed merger," he further added.

Oman LNG, which employs 460 people, is the operator of Qalhat LNG and the idea of the integration is to achieve optimisation in terms of market, people and also to give a common message to the market that these companies are representing Oman's LNG industry. However, there will not be any change in operation of these two companies, despite merger.

Dr Al Rumhy said there was a reorganisation of Oman Oil Company and Oman Gas Company. Now OGC is fully owned by Oman Oil Co.
