Muscat: There was celebrations all round when the home team, The Wave, Muscat, pulled off a stunning come-from-behind victory, achieving the biggest single day turn-around in the event's history, to win the Extreme Sailing Series Muscat by a slender six points.
The top three team were awarded with traditional Omani silver trophies by Her Highness Dr Muna Al Said who was the chief guest of the prize giving ceremony, surrounded by thousands of spectators who came to support and celebrate the Omani win.
The Omani team had a dire day yesterday, struggling in ultra-light conditions while their rivals on Red Bull Sailing Team sailed impeccably. As a result, going into racing on the final day, The Wave, Muscat trailed the Austrian team of double Tornado Olympic Gold medallist Roman Hagara, by 15 points. But in yesterday's six races, culminating in the usual double points scoring finale, the Omani team turned the tables.
Jubilant "We knew that 15 points was a big ask," recounted a jubilant McMillan afterwards. "We didn't think it was out of the question though, so we focussed on sailing as best we could and seeing how much we could eat into Red Bull's lead."
The Wave, Muscat strode way with four wins and two thirds in yesterday's first six races putting the Omani team ahead by just two points going into the decider.
Victory for The Wave, Muscat makes amends for her result here in 2012 when she lost by the narrowest of margins to team mates, Oman Air. McMillan added he was proud of his crew, which, in addition to old hands Pete Greenhalgh, Ed Smyth, Hashim Al Rashdi, this season includes a new Omani sailor Musab Al Hadi.
Team Duqm Oman also ended racing here in Muscat on a high, winning the double points scoring final race. "Our aim was to try to win a race and we won two, which we were quite pleased about," recounted skipper Robert Greenhalgh.
For a new team, with little training before its first regatta, finishing with just one spot shy off the podium bodes well.
The teams will now prepare their boats for the second act of the series to be hosted in Singapore in April followed by Qingdao, China. Teams will then head to the European venues after the forth act in Istanbul before concluding the final leg of the season in Rio, Brazil in November.
