Muscat: Leandro Negre, president of the International Hockey Federation (FIH), will attend the final match of the Arab Club Hockey Championship in Muscat on March 18. The eight-day tournament, which begins today at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher, will have six club teams participating from four countries.

Speaking to Times Sport, Redha Taqi Al Lawati, general secretary of the Oman Hockey Association (OHA), confirmed that Negre would be the special guest during the final day of the tournament.

"Upon our invitation, the FIH president will be here to attend the final of the Arab Club Championship," Redha said. Two clubs from the UAE and one club each from Egypt and Libya will take part in the tournament. HM Cup champions Ahli-Sidab Club, along with Al Nasr Club, will also take part from Oman. "Negre's presence will be a big boost for OHA, as we are trying to promote the game in a big way," Redha noted. The Arab Hockey Federation has also announced it will hold the upcoming General Assembly and board elections in Muscat on March 17.

Asia Cup
Meanwhile, Oman will participate in the Ninth Asia Cup to be held in Ipoh, Malaysia from August 24-September 1, 2013. Last week, officials of the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) sent a formal invitation to all teams that are eligible to take part in the tournament. "We did receive an invite from AHF, but we have yet to send them a response. However, I would like to confirm that we will participate in the tournament," Redha said. The Asia Cup is a qualifying tournament for the 13th Men's World Cup in 2014.

"It is a prestigious tournament and it also gives us an opportunity to qualify for the World Cup," he noted. India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Korea, Japan, China and Bangladesh are the other teams eligible to take part in the tournament.

Kurtz to continue
Newly-appointed Oman coach Oliver Kurtz, who signed a six-month contract early this month with OHA, will receive an additional boost as the governing body has decided to renew his agreement in September, regardless of the performance of the national team in the coming months.

"We felt the need for employing a long-term coach and Oliver can do justice to the role. We seriously feel that his presence is essential for the national team so, regardless of the performance, we have decided to renew his contract once it ends in September," Redha said.

Kurtz, a former player who won a gold medal for the German national team at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, had formally taken charge of the team in February for round two of the FIH World Hockey League (WHL), which was held in New Delhi.
"We have full faith in Kurtz and we know that he requires more time with the team and the players, and they also need time to adapt to his teachings," Redha added.
