Duoqm: Located strategically, in proximity to easily available natural resources and land, Duqm, with the official commencement of commercial activities at the Port of Duqm, promises to become a springboard for growth.
Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Salim Al Futaisi, minister of transport and communications, while attending the port's inauguration at Quay No. 1, said, "The Port of Duqm is expected to buoy the country's net worth, and it will catalyse the development of Al Wusta Governorate ."
In his opening remarks, Reggy Peter Broers, chief executive officer of Port of Duqm Company Vermeulen and commercial director of the Port of Duqm, stated that the inauguration of the Port of Duqm, marking the commencement of commercial activity at the port, is the first step towards a bright future for Oman. Reggy went on to outline the progress of the port. Dr Yahya Al Jabri, chairman of the Authority of Duqm, also graced the occasion.
Soft opening
The soft opening for commercial activity will give Duqm a major boost to achieve its full potential in the coming years.
The port is expected to take Oman one step closer to becoming a leading player in the shipping and logistics industry in the region. The port's establishment also marks the beginning of the development of the entire area around Duqm and will open doors to attract large investments from major global corporations.
The inauguration is considered to be the official start of activity at the commercial quay, and for the first time, the Port of Duqm Company has opened its offices in Duqm. During the opening, two contracts were signed to provide shipping and logistics services. One contract was signed by Richmond Group and the Port of Duqm for the import and distribution of bitumen, which is used for laying roads, highways, and so on, in Oman.
The second contract was signed by the Port of Duqm and Bahwan DHL to establish a logistics hub that will serve the country's infrastructure and its oil fields.
Plans are in the pipeline for Duqm to support industrial and commercial activities as well as tourism activities, which will be introduced in the future through plans and programmes created by the Special Economic Zone Authority of Duqm. The Port of Duqm was established as a joint venture between the government of Oman and Antwerp Port Consortium. The concession agreement between the two parties included the management and operation of the port.
