Muscat: Azaan Al Rumhi was crowned champion of the 40th Muscat Open Championship, organised by Ras Al Hamra Golf Club (RAHGC) and hosted by Muscat Hill Golf and Country Club.
During the two-day competition, he had a close contest with the Oman Open Champion, Jeff Campbell. Staying two shots ahead after day one, Azaan managed to maintain his lead throughout day two to win with a final score of 151. Jeff, who scored a birdie on the last hole, came second in his maiden Muscat Open, with a score of 153. Third place was fiercely contested by two former Muscat Open Champions, Ed Edwards from Doha and local star Puli Sharma. They both scored 160; however, Ed had a better result on day two and placed third on Count-back. Mike Bulliman had a good second day and managed to capture the fifth place, with a score of 162.
A delighted Azaan commented, "It feels good to have won for the fourth time and to have become the most successful champion in the history of the Muscat Open."
One of Oman's rising stars, Hamood Salim Al Harthy, won the junior category with a gross score of 178, which put him ahead of many senior golfers.
The Oman junior team was invited to play on equal terms, so they could gain experience from competing at the highest level. Fahad Harib Al Kitani won the junior nett prize. For the nett prizes, the result was also very close, with Mohammed Nasaruddin claiming the top spot with a score of 142—just one shot ahead of Mohammed Fauzi Adnan on 143.
Vishal Dhawan came third on 147, followed by Ahmed Abdulla Al Balushi on 148 and Gary Battersby on 150. The plate winner was Ian Felton on 153.During the prize-giving ceremony, Muscat Open Chairman Mundhir Al Barwani thanked all the players, the organising committee, and the volunteers. He also thanked the sponsors Gulf Agency Company, Aker Solutions, SC Mustaqbal Tubular Solutions of Sumitomo Corporation, Galfar, Sulzer Pumps Middle East, Proscape, Ingenieursburo Gommer BV, and Halcrow Middle East for their support. Mundhir concluded by inviting all the players to participate in the 41st edition of the Muscat Open, which will hopefully return next year to the new grassed and floodlit golf course at Ras Al Hamra.
