Doha:
Rukshika Wijesooriya, the Sri Lankan junior who caused ripples in the local tennis circuit with her impressive wins and who is currently on a short holiday in Oman reached the Asian Junior Championships – Under-14 final in Qatar earlier this month losing to the eventual winner Najafi Dehagi of Iran (Asia No. 2) – 3-6, 6-0, 6-3.
During the time she spent in Oman while a student at the Sri Lankan School in Muscat, Rukshika won the Oman Open Under-10, Under-12 and Under-14 categories before progressing to win the Al Bustan Palace Hotel Open tournament for Ladies in 2012.
She has now made giant strides in Sri Lanka under the watchful training of former Sri Lankan champion, Jayendra Wijeyesekera.
Immediately on her arrival in Sri Lanka, Rukshika made a big impact by becoming a semifinalist in the ladies category at the S.S.C. tournament.
She went on to become a quarterfinalist in the Under-14 tournament of the Sri Lanka Junior National Championship and was runner-up in the doubles.
Not content with the string of victories, the young lass secured third place in the Asian Junior Championships held in Colombo followed by her recent success in reaching the final of the Under-14 Asian Junior Championships held earlier this month in Qatar.
In addition to all this success, Rukshika took part in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior Under-18 tournament held in Colombo and benefited from the exposure.
Currently Rukshika is ranked No. 1 in the Under-14 category in the Sri Lanka Lawn Tennis Association standings.
Based on her outstanding performances, Rukshika was selected to represent Sri Lanka at the Asian Development Tennis Tournament held in Vietnam in January this year and reached the quarterfinals before losing to the top seed and eventual winner, Tiffany of Vietnam.
Rukshika now travels to Malaysia to represent Sri Lanka in the World Junior pre-qualifying tournament scheduled to take place from March 17 to 22.
Currently Rukshika is ranked 1,833 in the Junior International Tennis Federation rankings and was ranked 41 in the Asian Junior Under-14 standings.
