Muscat: As a tribute to the late Essa bin Mohammed Al Zedjali, the founder of Muscat Press and Publishing House, the Times of Oman has instituted a champions' rolling trophy in his name for its inter-school quiz contest.
The winning schools at the Times of Oman Inter School Quiz Contest (TOOISQC) will lift the Essa bin Mohammed Al Zedjali rolling trophy for their school.
The TOOISQC is slated to be held on April 25, at the City Amphitheatre in Muscat. The rolling trophy will be presented in two categories — junior (grades 8 and below) and senior (grades 9 to 13).
Speaking on the decision to launch the rolling trophy in the name of the founder of the Times of Oman, Mohamed Issa Al Zadjali, vice-chairman of MPPH, said, "Our late chairman was very enthusiastic about both the quizzes: Times of Oman Open Quiz Contest and TOOISQC. He believed the quiz was a fantastic platform created by Times of Oman. He always said it helped students cultivate a liking for non-academic reading, not only from a quiz point of view but from an information-appreciation point of view. In this modern world, knowledge in any form leads to improved confidence, better communication, and greater success. Besides, this is a social event attended by students, teachers, and parents. The Essa bin Mohammed Al Zedjali Rolling Trophy is a tribute to his pioneering initiatives."
Noting that this is a great way to keep his ideology of spreading knowledge alive, quizmaster Giri 'Pickbrain' Balasubramaniam said, "The late chairman was a true knowledge evangelist, who appreciated continuous learning. He instantly endorsed the idea of relaunching the school quiz, so it is a fitting tribute to institute this rolling trophy in his memory."
The rolling trophy will be given to the winning school for display on the school premises and will be taken back in December to be kept ready for the next competition.
Based on popular demand, Times of Oman has decided to hold the inter-school quiz in junior and senior categories. This year, there will be two sets of prelims, mega-prelims, and finals in each category.
The tentative dates for the preliminary round of the quiz are April 16–18, 20, and 21. The two sets of prelims will be held across different schools in the Sultanate. The two mega prelims will be held on April 23.
