Muscat: Professor Fatma Salem Seif Al Maamary, the first Omani woman to get a PhD degree, was a role model and a pioneer, whose life has now been documented in a biography by Dr Asyah Al Bualy.

From the time she was a child, Dr Asyah had known her great-aunt Fatma was special because she had a PhD, the highest possible certificate of education, and she worked in a university. Although young, Asyah didn't completely understand what PhDs and universities were, she understood that her great-aunt wasn't like the other women around her.

"I knew from the beginning that there was something special about her. She wasn't stereotypical," Dr Asyah told Times of Oman in an interview about her book, The Pioneer, Professor Fatma Salem Seif Al-Maamary (1911–2002): A Historical, Documentary and Academic Study.

Fatma's grandfather had placed a high value on education, so thanks to his vision, Fatma, who was born in 1911, was educated in Cairo. She was one of the first Arab girls to graduate from high school and attend university, not just obtaining a bachelor's degree but going on to work on her PhD in Literature from England in the 1950s.

She taught in a university in Alexandria, and in 1971, after His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said came to power, Fatma returned to Oman, where she taught English at the Ministry of Defence. Although, a university had not yet been built here, she wanted to contribute to
Oman's development.

According to Al Bualy, Egyptian society was quite supportive of women at the time, as was His Majesty, which helped Fatma, but she was also a woman who was determined to reach higher in life and shape her own future.

Omanis can learn a lot from her. She always said "To be successful is up to you," said Dr Asyah. "I decided to write about her because she's a part of Omani history and Arab history. It's very important for us to know how far back education goes for Omani women and for how long Omani women have been free in terms of thinking, positions held, and dealing with others."

The Pioneer, Professor Fatma Salem Seif Al-Maamary (1911–2002): A Historical, Documentary and Academic Study was originally published in Arabic in 2008, but Dr Asyah wanted English speakers to be able to read it too and be inspired by Fatma's
achievements.

The book launch will take place on March 25 at Al Harthy Hall in Qurum, under the auspices of Dr Rawya Al Busaidi, Minister of Higher Education. Following the launch, the book will be available at the Oman Cancer Association, to which all the proceeds of sales will be donated.
