Renewing your body during Ramadan

Ramadan is the time of year when millions of Muslims dedicate themselves to one month of fasting with the aim to gain spiritual growth and positive change. And while Ramadan offers a time of inner reflection and prayer, fasting during the Holy month of Ramadan can also have great beneficial effects on the body if it is done correctly.

During Ramadan, fasting correctly results in detoxification and the elimination of fat and according to experts, higher levels of endorphins in the blood. It also affects the body's largest organ - the skin. 

"During Ramadan your skin can get severely dehydrated…treatments that cleanse and remove impurities from your skin and awaken your senses - instantly firming and improving skin's tone and texture are ideal during the Holy Month," Ashna Ddhannak, Recreations and Spa Manager, Taj Palace Dubai, said.

While you are fasting, your body and skin goes through many changes and for this reason you need to take a special care of your skin. Skin care in Ramadan is very important and is often overlooked explains YHI Spa Melia Manager, Cristina Iancu. "Dehydration is the most common threat that is associated with fasting, because you are not consuming adequate fluids to keep you hydrated. Due to dehydration, the skin becomes dull and loses tone. We recommend clients to make time for treatments such as our Ramadan Retreat, which is specially offered during the Holy Month."

Other treatments that are proving popular in the Gulf include Body Wrap's, which helps to detoxify the body and Facial Treatments, which bring back the glow, and brighten the skin. 

Iancu explains, "Most women suffer from water retention and an increase in their cellulite levels. This can be dealt with in the spa with specific treatments like a detoxifying body wrap treatment, complimented by a special massage that helps to eliminate toxins and breakdown cellulite.

Wilma Baretto, Spa Manager, Jasmine Spa, Grand Millennium Dubai says that during Ramadan many people feel tired, frequently suffering headaches or body aches. It is also important to hydrate the skin with nourishing spa treatments that replace lost nutrients and mineral – Fasting also helps us to reach closer into the deep tissue and is an ideal time to detoxify the body by obtaining a full body massage."
 
However the greatest concern while fasting is the dehydration. Experts say it is vital that you drink plenty of water after Iftar and eat fruits that have high water content like watermelon and grapes. 

Also at Suhoor, include homemade juices with less or no sugar to your menu plan, as these will also replenish your vitamins. Foods can also be used on the skin as well to nourish and revitalise.
