Muscat: Unidentified suspects burgled the Bank Muscat's branch in Hayal area in the wilayat of Ibri at around 5am yesterday, a Royal Oman Police (ROP) officer told the Times of Oman.
The ROP officer said the perpetrators cut off the electrical cables of the bank and broke down its main door besides smashing the surveillance cameras. The accused managed to steal a small safe from the bank but failed to carry away the bigger safe due to its weight.
Sources from Bank Muscat said that the smaller safe had no money inside and no cash was stolen from the bank in the burglary bid.
According to sources, a piece of evidence found at the crime scene ó a cellphone belonging to a person of Asian nationality.
Bank Muscat's branch in Hayal area is 35km from the Ibri police station, thus giving the perpetrators enough time to carry out their operation before the police could reach the spot.
Investigation is underway and the miscreants remain at large, the ROP said.
The bank branch where the incident took place yesterday would remain closed for maintenance till further notice.
It should be recalled that this is not the first time that a Bank Muscat branch was burgled or an attempt was made to decamp with the money kept in the bank branch. In March 2013, the staff at a Bank Muscat branch in Fanja foiled a robbery attempt by a person of Arab nationality. In another incident in 2010, a masked man robbed a bank in Ghala at knife point, decamping with OMR48,000.
