Muscat: The General Assembly of The General Federation of Oman Trade Unions (GFOTU) held a meeting at Nizwa College of Technology yesterday to elect the Governing Body of the Oil and Gas Sector's Wor-kers' Union (OGSWU), under the auspices of Hamad bin Khamis Al A'mri, undersecretary of the Ministry of Manpower for Labour Affairs.
GFOTU aims to care for the interests of its members, defend their rights and raise their professional and cultural levels, represent them in all matters concerning their affairs and work to develop labour legislation for employees of the oil and gas sector.
OGSWU also supports the cooperation between the unions working under it, along with the Ministry of Manpower and GFOTU, supporting the efforts among the unions working under it and employers, participation on boards and committees on labour and workers affairs at the oil and gas sector, as well as considering the request for suspension of members of the governing bodies of the trade unions under it, as provided for in the statutes of the Trade Union.
Hamad bin Khamis Al A'mri said that what happened yesterday is a great addition for the union work in the Sultanate as the trade union action always tends towards specialised sectors, and there should be cooperation between trade unions set up in the private sector until there is a unified vision.
Further, Nabhan Al Batashi, Deputy Chairman of GFOTU, said that establishment of OGSWU is an important addition to private sector workers' union in the Sultanate.
