Muscat: Teenagers P. Sai Sharan and Subash Pillai scored big wins in the men's singles event at the Annual Table Tennis Tournament organised by the Indian Social Club Muscat and sponsored by Muscat Insurance Services (MIS).
Sai Sharan displayed great improvement and went on to register two impressive victories over fancied players in the men's singles. Sharan first scalped seasoned campaigner Atul Tamhane with a dogged display that saw him win a first round thriller 7-11, 16-14, 9-11, 11-9, 11-7. Not satisfied with this, Sharan scored a bigger win in the second round when he outplayed No. 8 seed Manu Kishore in four games 11-6, 11-8, 6-11, 11-9 in the second round.
Likewise, Subash Pillai showed remarkable stamina and sound temperament to send seventh seed Simon Joseph crashing out in the first round with a 7-11, 11-8, 11-5, 12-14, 11-4 verdict. Subash, however, ran out of luck when he squandered positions of advantage to go down to R.
Gopalakrishnan in the second round. Gopalakrishnan won 11-8, 17-15, 11-4. In other second round matches of the men's singles, defending champion Suhail Khan coasted to a 11-4, 11-5, 11-5 victory over Melwyn Vaz and second seed Kenneth Vaz defeated Anoop Bheda 11-7, 11-3, 11-7.
Meanwhile, third seed Avinash Mukund sailed to a one-sided 11-1, 11-4, 11-1 win over Harshvardhan Jog and fourth seed Armaan Sattikar easily won with a 11-5, 11-8, 11-8 victory over Sagayaraj S.
Fifth seed R. Subramanian scored a fine 11-6, 11-8, 11-8 victory over Yash Tanna and sixth seed Srinivas Iyer survived a scare and was stretched to the limit before edging to a nerve-biting 7-11, 11-9, 11-8, 9-11, 16-14 win to enter the quarter finals. Srinivas held a 8-3 lead in the decider before a brilliant fightback saw Ashish level the score. A see-saw battle ensued, with both failing to convert match point before Srinivas could take a breather.
