Omani artist Hassan Meer will participate in an innovative film and video exhibition in Berlin that will be exclusively broadcast on TV and online.
A short film by Meer, a painter, photographer, installation artist and filmmaker, will be included in the first ever Ikono On Air Festival, which will be held from September 6 to 29, in Berlin, Germany. The festival will include artists from around the world and will be accessible internationally, since it will be streamed live on Ikono's website.
For Meer, who is making a name in the international art scene, the opportunity is important because it reflects the growing interest that established art organisations and communities have in the Middle Eastern artists.
"It's good for us as Arab artists because it means we are becoming known internationally," Meer told the Times of Oman.
Meer's work often focuses on the contradictions and discordances that arise between the existing customs and the modernisation that is taking place in Oman. His work also reflects his own personal experiences as an artist, an Arab and a Muslim.
His short video titled My Studio, will be included in the Ikono On Air Festival, which will feature over 200 hours worth of videos. The festival will have contemporary perspectives on film, video art, and other time-based art forms, all exclusively broadcast on TV and streamed live.
The festival follows Ikono's aim to create visual links between time periods, different artistic movements and disciplines, and combines contemporary non-narrative films and other time-based art practices from the last few decades with a retrospective from the Ikono collection of video clips focusing on art from antiquity to the present.
"Every time when we can participate in exhibitions at such a high level, more people come to know about us," Meer added.
