A high level organising committee appointed for the upcoming 2013 Laser World Championships, being hosted in Oman for the first time in November, has given an enthusiastic thumbs up to preparations for the event after visiting the venue at Mussanah Sports City this week.
The committee, under the chairmanship of the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Sports Affairs Sheikh Rashad Al Hinai, was in Mussanah to check the progress of onsite development, review the work already accomplished and detail the final preparations to be carried out by various sub-committees to guarantee the success of the event.
The other members of the organising committee are Rashid bin Ibrahim Al Kindi (Oman Sailing Committee President and deputy chairman of the committee); Fahd bin Abdullah Al Raisi (Head of public relations and communications); David Graham (CEO Oman Sail as representative of Oman Sail); Issa bin Sultan Al Ismaili (Director of the championship and head of the events committee); Lieutenant-Colonel Ibrahim bin Said Shukaily (representing the Royal Oman Police as head of the security committee) and Ahmed bin Said Al Farsi (head of the financial and administrative affairs committee).
It is for the first time that the Laser World Championships are being held in the Middle East. It is also one of the biggest sporting events ever hosted in Oman.
As a key Olympic class event, it will attract top ranked competitors including Olympic, world and national champions from 44 nations who will compete in three separate events: the Laser Standard Men's World Championship from November 17-23, the Laser Master's from December 1-7 and the Laser Radial Youth World Championship from December 29 to January 3, 2014.
Over 1,000 additional visitors are expected to visit the country during the championships including race officials, international media, coaches and
Preparations in full swing
Issa bin Sultan Al Ismaili, director of the championship, member of the organising committee and head of the events committee, said he was happy to report that all preparations were well advanced and proceeding as planned. "The International Laser Class Association selected Oman as the host country for all three championships because of our world class infrastructure, rich history in sailing, proven success in developing our youth through the sport of sailing and because of past experience in organising successful international sport events.
"Our aim is to capitalise on these valuable attributes of ours and give the visiting teams a unique and memorable world class event that will create a legacy for our own national sailors competing against the world's best in their home waters."
Al Ismaili said an important aspect of the organising committee's visit to Mussanah was to ensure that recreational activities, social and cultural programmes and tours were planned so that competitors and accompanying visitors could enjoy a truly authentic Omani experience during their stay.
"They will quickly discover that Mussanah Sports City is a premier Olympic standard sailing destination, thanks to our perfect weather conditions, world class facilities and equipment but we also want to introduce them to the Oman." he added.
