Oman will witness a phenomenon known as the autumn equinox -a unique event when the day is equal to night. It is forecast to fall on September 28 as per the astronomical calendar.
According to Oman Astronomical Society's calculation, the Autumn Equinox took place on Monday September 23rd at 12.44 AM.
Ali bin Aamer Al Shibani, Head of Public Relations and Media at the Omani Astronomical Society, says days will be equal to nights in most countries of the world after which they will become gradually shorter and nights longer.
He added that in Oman's Equinoctial Day will be on Saturday September 28, when the sun will rise at 05.56 am and set at 05.56 pm.
This exciting phenomenon has drawn the attention of several astronomers in Oman. Speaking to Times of Oman, Dr. Zach Ioannou of the Physics Department in College of Science at the Sultan Qaboos University, explained the phenomenon "Autumn Equinox" is the time when the Earth's axis is perpendicular to the plane of its orbit around the Sun. He added that this also happens in the spring.
"The dates when places on the Earth get equal amount of day and night differ slightly from the Autumn Equinox and depend on their latitude mainly due to the Earth's atmosphere and non-spherical shape," he told Times of Oman.
"As Oman is situated at latitude of about 23.5 degrees north, the equinoctial day is slightly offset by a few days from the day of the Autumn Equinox, these days are called 'Equinoctial Days'. This is due to take place on September 28.
"The duration of this offset does not change with time and it is the same every year," the professor added.
