: Al Shabab trounced Al Ittihad 2-0 to win their second match of Omantel Professional League (OPL) at Seeb Sports Stadium yesterday.
This is Al Ittihad's second defeat in two weeks after the OPL started. Two weeks ago they were crushed by tournament favourites Fanja 4-2 at the same venue.
Playing aggressively from the start, Al Shabab players were looking for nothing less than a victory following their 1-1 draw against Fanja in the inaugural match. In the 32nd minute of first half, Mohammed Al Taqi scored the first goal for Al Shabab.
In the second half, it was Younis Al Mushaifri who scored the second goal for Al Shabab in the 56th minute of the game to guide his side to victory.
It is worth mentioning that Al Ittihad axed their regular coach Frenchman Noureddine Abu Falgha after the team's defeat to Fanja at the Seeb Sports Stadium.
Speaking to the media after the match, Al Shabab coach Idriz Al Murabati said his side deserved to win the game.
"Our players were quite taken aback following the draw against Fanja. They always wanted to come back. There is good fighting spirit among our players and they showed that today," Idriz said.
Al Shabab will next play popular local team Al Seeb on Thursday. "That will be a great match. We are taking one match at a time. Seeb had some good games in the last two weeks and now they are in a similar position like us with a win and a draw so it is going to be a tough match for both the sides," Idriz noted.
Heaping praise on his players, Idriz urged his players to keep up the consistency. "I want this form of my boys to be consistent. I don't want them to get carried away by this win. We still have lots many games to go. This is just a start and we have miles to go," he added.
Earlier in the first match of the day, Saham stunned nine-time League champion Dhofar with a 1-0 victory at the Sohar Sports Complex.
