All four members of an Omani family were killed in an early morning fire accident, according to the Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulance (PACDA). The fire broke out at a villa behind the Al Meera Mall in Azaiba.
"Around 4:00 am, we received a call about the fire at a villa in Azaiba area. We rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control. While searching through the house, we found four family members – father, mother and two children – inside the house," said a posting on the authority's Facebook page.
The PACDA ambulances rushed the four to the Royal Hospital where they were pronounced dead. According to the medics, the four died around 3am, the PACDA posting claimed. According to a family friend, the mother was a teacher in a school and the father was working in an auto company in Muscat.
"The six-year-old girl, who was the elder child, was studying in Class 1 while the younger child was a two-year-old boy," a family friend told the Times of Oman.
Thick fumes of deadly and toxic fumes and gases, particularly carbon monoxide, emitting from the smouldering fire are believed to have suffocated the family members to death. All four were found in the same room in the house.
The authority said it was investigating the cause of the fire.
