Lifeline Group unites for diabetes in Oman

Muscat: Diabetes has been recognised by World Health Organisation as a chronic, debilitating and costly disease associated with major complications that pose severe risks for families, countries and the entire world.

November 14th was designated as the official World Diabetes Day in 2007. The World Diabetes Day 2013 campaign marks the fifth and final year of the 2009-2013 campaign on the theme Diabetes: Education and Prevention. The goal is to inspire and involve local communities to promote and distribute simple education and prevention messages and to organise activities to create awareness among the public that diabetes is a serious health threat with far-reaching consequences affecting all of us.

From the local to the global level, the campaign will stress the importance of small and simple actions to achieve meaningful results for people with diabetes and those at risk.

With this aim in mind, Lifeline Hospital Sohar is organising free diabetes awareness campaign in Sohar, Salalah and Darsait today and tomorrow from 9am to 12 noon and from 5pm to 8pm.

Specialists in internal medicine will screen the candidates and female participants can consult the gynaecologists for advice on gestational diabetes, BP, BMI and blood sugar levels will be checked. Nutritional counselling and diet charts will also be offered to the participants.

"We have detected several people with very high levels of sugar during routine medical examinations and during health camps organised for the public. Because they had no symptoms, most of them were totally unaware that they were diabetic and this is a worrying factor," stated Dr Rohil Raghavan, hospital director of Lifeline Group.

"During this campaign, we are targeting the general population who would normally shy away from visiting a hospital and hope to motivate them to check their health status free of cost," Rohil Raghavan said.
