Artificial reefs set up in Seeb, Bausher to help fishermen

Muscat: As part of the project  launched by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and The Wave, Muscat to support the fishing community in the wilayats of Seeb and Bausher, a total of 60 purpose-built artificial reefs were placed on the seabed at 20 locations on 6 January, 2014.

The locations were chosen based on the sea depth and solidity of the sea bottom to ensure the stability and sustainability of the reefs. The artificial reefs, named Arabic Pyramids after their shape, are manufactured with the latest marine technology and are the first of their kind to be used in the Sultanate.

Each artificial reef is 1.8m high and 2.5m wide and weighs about 1.4 tonne each. The 60 units were placed at a depth of more than 15m; covering 40,000-square-metre of area located about 5km east off the Almouj Marina.
