Rock slides hit Khasab-Bakha road, one dead

Muscat: Efforts are on to clear the debris from the Khasab-Bakha road in the Musandam Governorate following rock slides in the wake of the heavy rainfall in the area during the last few days. Rock slides punctuated the road connecting Khasab and Bakha, bringing to a grinding halt the traffic movement for more than a day.

One person of Asian nationality was killed when a huge rock fell on his truck. The man succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital while five others sustained medium to light injuries.

The rock slides also resulted in severe to medium damage to dozens of vehicles on the road, an official at the Khasab police station told the Times of Oman.

The road was later closed to prevent any further accidents and to clear the debris, the official added.

Despite the citizens asking for a change of route for the past few years, frequent rock slides have become the order of the day every time it rains — at times even when it is not raining.

A tender to renovate and improve the condition of the Khasab to Bakha road was approved by the Tender Committee in 2012, but work hasn't seen the light of day so far.

The Minister of Transport and Communications Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Futaisi said he was very keen to resolve the issue and get the project going as soon as possible. He  said, "We will make it our top priority."

Ahmed Al Shihi, an Omani citizen who survived miraculously  when a rock fell on top of his 4WD vehicle, told the Times of Oman that he wanted the authorities concerned to urgently intervene and pre-empt any fatalities that could happen in the future.

Many other citizens, just like Ahmed, have expressed their anger and disappointment over the delay in improving the condition of this road.

Sources at Khasab said the route remained very risky even after the debris is cleared since there are huge cracks in the mountains.
