Muscat: Oman international goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi earned another feather on his cap after being voted the favourite loan player of Wigan Athletic on Wednesday. Ali Al Habsi, who is inspiring Wigan Athletic in the defence of the FA Cup, garnered 47 percent of votes from the English club fans.
Six Wigan's present and former players on loan — Ali Al Habsi, Antonio Valencia, Paul Scharner, Amr Zaki, Tom Cleverley and Nick Powell — were put on the poll run by the club (wiganathletic.com) with fans having a chance to voice their choice on Twitter, Facebook and Instagarm.
Thanks to Ali's inspirational performances for the club present and past after joining Wigan on loan, he gained him whopping support as the other players polled below 15 percent.
"First of all I would like to say that it's fantastic and something I'm very proud of," said Ali reacting to the result. "I'm very grateful to the fans, especially because there were some big players like Antonio Valencia, Paul Scharner and Amr Zaki to vote for.
"When I signed my deal to be here for the 2010-11 season it was a very happy day for me. My first game was against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League and we won and kept a clean sheet which was a fantastic start for me. We had a bad start to the season conceding 10 goals in two games, so there was big pressure on me coming in for my debut against Spurs.
"It's always good when you're a goalkeeper to have a special start at a club and I'm very happy with the way thing started, especially because I created a special bond with the fans which is still between us now."
Meanwhile, following a string of impressive saves in Latics' 2-1 fourth round FA Cup victory over Crystal Palace, goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi said, "it's fantastic to progress; it was a very hard game.
We've arrived back at the DW Stadium showing exactly what we're all about and who we are. It's been a long time since we won a game at home in the FA Cup, so that's another significant achievement for us."
Latics are now into the fifth round of the FA Cup for the third time in the club's history and the second consecutive season, Al Habsi added that there is a fantastic feeling around the current cup run.
