When a film is a result of coming together of prolific names like Karan Johar and Anurag Kashyap who are famous for cinema which is poles apart, it is bound to raise curiosity. Hasee toh Phasee directed by debutant Vinil Mathew takes you on the same jaded journey but chooses a path which is utterly chaotic and immensely fun.
Right from the first sequence you know that you are not in for a typical Bollywood candy floss film. You are introduced to the protagonists in the first five minutes and you instantly catch up to the fact that meeting of these two characters is a perfect recipe for disaster. The story takes time leaps feverishly in the first odd thirty minutes and you hardly get time to catch hold of the plot. It is after this amazing start the film starts to dip in terms of movement in story line.
Although there are enough amusing sequences which keep you hooked to the proceedings but these don't necessarily amalgamate into the plot and after a while the first half seems to get stagnant and stretched.
Also a lot of screen time is wasted on various sub plots which seem to have come under the knife on the editing table and are forgotten in second half.
It's the second half which carries the real punch. Other than the absolute madness of the first half which it carries forward what works is also the emotional moments between Parineeti and her family and the romance between Siddharth and Parineeti is skillfully developed with some really endearing moments interspersed in the proceedings.
Judging from the quality of writing though one stands to be disappointed with the climax which has been stretched by good twenty minutes and becomes severely clichéd and predictable.
As far as the plot is concerned expect nothing new from it. It's the same old love triangle which you would have seen in hundred other films. Its real strength lies in its refreshing writing. There are ample sequences which are highly imaginative and genuinely funny. The dialogues are the best part of the enterprise especially the once mouthed by Parineeti. They are smart, witty and leave you in splits.
The film demanded strong actors without whom the script would have been a complete mishap. Luckily the protagonists do not disappoint. They seem to be tailor made for their roles and the chemistry between them compliments the writing perfectly. Siddharth Malhotra gives a well rounded performance with utmost maturity and is immensely likable. This film belongs to Parineeti Chopra. She has a complex role to perform and she comes with a winning performance. She is a powerhouse of talent which has been fully tapped by the enterprise. Manoj Joshi and the cousin who imitates Anu Malik are other two actors who stand out from the supporting cast members.
Music by Vishal Shekhar is in complete sync with the film and after a long time the duo have come out with an album which reflects their talent. A perfect album for a romantic comedy.
Hasee toh Phasee can be described as a complete chaotic madness at best. No doubt there are flaws in the film but still all its idiosyncrasies and innovativeness outweighs its flaws completely. It is one hell of a ride which maybe silly and clichéd but most importantly keeps you thoroughly entertained throughout. Definitely worth your time!
