Muscat: Team Sur were crowned champions of the BankDhofar Beach Fives football tournament held during the week end at the North Al Hail Beach. Over 1,000 spectators and over 700 players attended the two-day event in Muscat, graced by Chief Guest Hazzaa Salim Al Saadi, CEO of the OFA, and Tony Mahoney, BankDhofar's CEO who crowned the winners and handed over a BankDhofar cheque of RO 1,000 to the winning team.
OFA commercial director, Nic Cartwright, said: "This has been a great weekend for both families and players alike. Many thanks for everyone who supported us on-event – volunteers, technical and medical staff, and all of the OFA staff. It was a pleasure to see over 1,000 families, children and beach soccer enthusiasts come down over the two-day event and have a fantastic time."
The tournament kicked off in style on Thursday with a completely sold out 64-team field for this year. The event was conceived by the OFA and BankDhofar to be one of the most prominent open annual beach soccer tournaments in the Sultanate, giving Omani players the opportunity to take centre stage at an organised, professional-quality event and to compete in front of top-level coaches.
Patrick Lloyd-Bradley, BankDhofar's, head of brand and marketing, said: "The inaugural event was a huge success amongst soccer teams and families in Muscat. This is a great way for BankDhofar to connect with the Omani community through sport and we are looking forward to events all around Oman next year so keep an eye out in 2013."
For the players, the tournament was about both winning the title and catching the eye of Oman National Beach Soccer Team coach, Talib Hilal, who was impressed with the tremendous talent at the inaugural tournament. Hilal attended the tournament and was on hand scouting for players to bring aboard the Oman National Beach Soccer Team, which will be participating in the Beach Soccer World Cup qualifiers to be held in January at Qatar.
