Muscat: Under the theme of 'Partners in Developing our Local Communities', the 14th Forum of the Arab Federation for Consumer (AFC), which is being hosted by the Public Authority for Consumer Protection (PACP), began. The opening ceremony of the three-day forum was presided over by Dr Abdullah bin Muhammad Al Saidi, Minister of Legal Affairs. Dr Saied bin Khames Al Kaabi, chairman of PACP said, "The global interest and attention attached to consumers is increasing every day. The welfare of consumer is being accorded top priority by the governments in the developed world."
Muhammad Rabei, the Secretary General of the Council of Arab Economic Unity, Arab League, stressed on the importance of and need for protecting Arab consumer from any counterfeit goods imported from abroad. Dr Muhammed Ebaidat, chairman of AFC explained that the federation is working on many levels and fronts. On the legal front it is creating regulations that protect consumers.
The forum discussed the role played by the competent governmental authorities to curb counterfeit goods and fraud; the legal aspects for fighting counterfeit; laws and regulations adopted, and the experiences of some Arab countries in protecting consumers.
