Youths to discuss innovation

Muscat: The Public Authority for Investment Promotion and Export Development (PAIPED) has launched the Muscat Youth Summit 2012, for which 200 students and 38 local and international speakers have gathered at the Millennium Resort in Mussanah.

The four-day summit will discuss innovation and entrepreneurship among the youth of Oman. Representing 26 nationalities, students between 15 and 24 years will take part in workshops and community projects with business innovators to discuss issues facing today's youths, with an eye towards their becoming tomorrow's leaders.

"The population of Oman is growing each year, and a very large proportion of the country is under 25 years of age. By inspiring a cultural shift, we can create new opportunities for the growing youth sector and help drive the economy forward," said His Highness Sayyid Faisal Al Said, chairperson of the Muscat Youth Summit Organising Committee.

The theme for this year's summit is 'Investing in Tomorrow', which was chosen because independent enterprise has become an increasingly popular career choice. A 2011 PAIPED survey of 2,000 young people, aged 15 to 24 years, indicated that 82 percent hope to be self-employed in the future.

Throughout the world, industries such as music, film, photography, graphic design, fashion and interactive entertainment are booming and offer freedom of expression for gifted and motivated entrepreneurs.

This year, visitors can experience the Summit by logging onto the Muscat Youth Summit website, www.muscatyouthsummit.com, and official Facebook fan page where a 3D Virtual Exhibit has been developed especially for the event. The Summit's official Twitter page will also be reporting live from the event.
