Oman, Germany talks begin

Muscat: The Joint Omani-German Committee will hold three- day meetings at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from today to discuss economic, cultural and human resources cooperation. The meetings will be headed by Sayyid Badr Hamad Al Busaidi, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the Omani side, and Anne Roth Herkes, Minister of State at the Ministry of Economy and Technology on the German side.

Oman and Germany have had diplomatic ties since 1972 and are strengthening their relations, especially in fields of trade, tourism, energy and renewable energy, a MoFA official told Times of Oman. He said Oman has a strong desire to increase trade with Germany and focus on areas of German expertise, which Oman can benefit from.

"We have identified areas that they are experts in. Technical training, for example, so we try to use their expertise. We are also encouraging more German investment in Oman," the official said.

Germany and the Sultanate of Oman have signed many Memorandums of Understanding and protocols, but now it is time to take action on the agreements, the official explained. He said there were plans to create a follow-up committee that would help implement the decisions taken at this week's meetings. "We have to have a mechanism for follow-up.  Then these issues can actually be implemented," he said.

The meetings will be the 12th session for the Joint Omani-German Committee, which resulted from an Economic Cooperation Agreement signed between the Sultanate of Oman and the Federal Republic of Germany in 1978.
