Muscat: Oman is currently experiencing a rapid increase in population, a steep increase in energy consumption per capita, and a steady decrease in fossil energy resources.

These three phenomena make the design of an energy-neutral Eco House relevant and timely. The Eco House designed by the team of the German University of Technology in Oman is now being presented at the Home Show, being held at the Oman International Exhibition Center.

Located on the new campus of the German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech) in Halban, the Eco House will be a two-storey residential building of 200sqm net indoor area that will serve as a guest house for the university. The concept for the Eco House is based on ten strategies for energy-efficiency.

It results in a building that can be operated at net zero-energy and achieves full comfort for its users. These 10 strategies can be wholly or partly translated from the Eco House project into future designs for residential and other purposes.

The building will be constructed throughout 2013 and will become operational in 2014.

The Eco House Team is a collaboration of GUtech's associate professors Nikolaus Knebel and Martin Werminghausen, students and graduates of the Department of Urban Planning and Architectural Design, as well as architectural and engineering consultants Hoehler+Partner LLC (Oman), Transsolar climate engineering, Ziegert Roswag Seiler architects and engineers, landscape architect Andrew Burton Anderson, and various German companies, which contribute with products and services, such as Bauer Nimr, Rehau, mywindows, BASF, Donauer.

The project leading to this result has received Project Grant Funding from the Research Council of the Sultanate of Oman Grant Agreement.
